Functional asymmetry is described using qualitative and quantitative indicators. Qualitative indicators of asymmetry, as a rule, are represented by a binary characteristic of a single trait: for example, a right – handed left – handed person, a thumb from above or below when interlacing fingers, etc. In some cases, there are three grades: right-handed, left-handed, am
238 bidext. Qualitative indicators are associated with stationary asymmetry and rarely or never change over the course of a person’s life. In contrast, quantitative indicators can describe both stationary and dynamic asymmetry. Often they point to a gradation of a quality trait. In right-handers, the right hand is almost always stronger than the left, however, during the day and under different functional states, the difference between the strength of the right and left hand will be different. Consider a few examples of the relationship of the distribution of SCP with qualitative and quantitative indicators of the FMA.
As it was shown earlier, the SCP parameters differ in right-handers and left-handers. Univariate analysis of variance revealed that the characteristics of the brain UPP also depend on sensory asymmetry. In subjects with the right leading eye, compared with subjects with the left leading eye, SCP and, accordingly, cerebral energy exchange are higher in the central, parietal and temporal areas of the left hemisphere. In addition, the potential difference between the left and right central regions (Cs-Cd) in the first group was higher than in the second, i.e. the hemisphere, the contralateral leading eye, had a higher energy metabolism. The pattern, in principle, is similar for both sensory and motor asymmetry.
There are also differences of SCP depending on postural asymmetry. In the sample with interlacing fingers in cases when the left thumb was located on the top, which is more common in left-handers, the subjects had a higher local potential in the right temporal region than in cases when the thumb of the right hand was on top. In the posture of Napoleon (posture with interlacing forearms) in cases where the top of the left hand was located, the subjects had a higher local potential in the right parietal region. These results confirm the perception of greater intensity of energy exchange in the right hemisphere in people with manifestations of left-handedness. Postural asymmetry indicators are often associated with the characteristics of the UPP of the right hemisphere, while other indicators of motor asymmetry correlate with the hemispheric difference UPP. Posements and motor reactions reflect different levels of movement, and, perhaps, therefore, the activity of different hemispheres takes the lead in their management.
