Why brilliant green?

Against the Opposition, journalists and even bloggers have recently been using the same political tool: a solution of brilliant green, commonly known as “green”, is being splashed in their faces. This week there have already been three cases when public people were doused (twice with greenery and once with an as yet unknown solution); Alexei Navalny has doctors who arrived at the scene of an ambulance with a chemical burn of the eye. On the Internet, you can find scenarios of revenge with green stuff and even lawyers about what this might threaten. We figure out why green stuff is dangerous, why it is used for such purposes and what to do if you become a victim of an attack.

Greenery solution is a relatively harmless thing, but unpleasant and can stain the skin for a very long time; many remember how in childhood during chickenpox, they were painted green speckled. If the aggressors who doused you are caught, then they are unlikely to be able to show them something more serious than hooliganism. In this case, the victim should feel resentment and humiliation, he will have to cancel the planned events and meetings – at least, this may be the calculation of the offenders. An additional nuisance is spoiled clothing or, for example, car upholstery. It is good when the solution touches only the skin in every sense; the green stuff can physiologically harm only if it gets on the mucous membranes or in the eyes.

Why is it dangerous?

Zelenka is an antiseptic that effectively destroys microbes, but is not used almost anywhere except in the post-Soviet space: firstly, due to the lack of accurate data on its carcinogenicity, and secondly, because of its unaestheticness, Western medicine is not “sharpened” only to treat diseases, but also to improve the quality of life. In addition to the dye itself, which in dry form looks like potassium permanganate granules, only with a green tint, the green stuff is almost entirely composed of 60% ethyl alcohol. If it gets on the mucous membranes, eyes and sometimes the skin, alcohol causes a chemical burn – in this case, there is a burning sensation in the eyes, tears flow, and vision may deteriorate or disappear. If concentrated alcohol gets on the mucous membrane – for example, in the mouth – then pain, swelling develops and blisters may appear.

How to deal with eye contact?

First aid for eye burns with alcohol is a long, for ten to fifteen minutes, rinsing with cool running water. It is imperative to call an ambulance, because the treatment does not end there. In the hospital, the eyes will be washed with special solutions and treatment will be prescribed : drops, ointments for the eyes and eyelids, or even special protective lenses for the duration of healing. The dye itself is probably not harmful, although its molecular mechanism of action is still unknown ; if the green stuff gets into the eye, the doctors will treat the chemical burn caused by alcohol.

How to wash or wash off the brilliant green?

You can try to wash off the stain from the skin with any alcohol-based solution – for example, an alcohol-based toner. True, this will take a long time to tinker and, most likely, the paint will only slightly lose its brightness. The internet recommends using lemon juice, nail polish remover, and even bleach based on bleach – but these can harm skin, especially sensitive skin, so it’s safest to just wait for the stain to fade on its own. You can try to save clothes by washing them with bleach, although you will most likely have to throw them away.

Sports checkup: How to keep track of your health if you love to exercise

Sports checkup: How to keep track of your health if you love to exercise

It’s important not to overdo it with going to the gym. Physical activity brings pleasure and makes us healthier but not every even completely healthy organism is able to endure this or that load. To determine which types of activity are useful and safe, a sports check-up or screening is carried out – it replaces the usual examination by a doctor in a fitness club.

We talked about screening with experts: Olga Malinovskaya, doctor of clinical laboratory diagnostics, medical director of the network of KDL laboratories, and Anton Feoktistov, co-founder of the personal training studio PRO TRENER and a specialist in physical culture and sports with coaching experience for more than nineteen years.

What is sports screening

A sports check-up is a comprehensive examination that includes several tests. Its task is to track the body’s response to different levels of stress; this will allow you to choose the appropriate training intensity and quickly achieve your goal – to gain muscle mass, reduce fat percentage, increase endurance, and so on. Unlike the standard medical examination, which is recommended to undergo before the start of classes, sports screening is much broader – it is a whole set of laboratory, instrumental and instrumental studies.

At the same time, during the examination, the doctor not only determines the general condition and speed of recovery after exercise, but can also reveal hidden diseases that have not yet manifested themselves. As a result, you get a medical opinion that is fully adapted to the training plan – with allowable loads, restrictions and contraindications, if any, as well as a description of the body’s abilities that you may not have noticed before. There are two types of sports screening: basic and advanced.

The doctor not only determines the general condition and speed of recovery after exercise, but can also reveal hidden diseases

According to Olga Malinovskaya, basic screening is recommended for those who start training for the first time or after a long break, in order to avoid possible problems with a sharp change in the level of activity. During the examination in the laboratory, more than ten parameters of the blood test are assessed, including indicators of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, data affecting endurance – hemoglobin level, the number of erythrocytes and reticulocytes, parameters of the immune system and thyroid gland. After a thorough analysis, a conclusion is issued with detailed comments, and in case of any violations, you can consult a doctor in a timely manner and solve the problem.

If you make a sports check in a private clinic, you will have to donate blood for general clinical, biochemical and hormonal tests, as well as urine to detect or exclude kidney diseases, bladder infections and water imbalance. The basic examination may also include ECG, ultrasound of the abdominal cavity and kidneys, impedance measurement – a method by which the percentage of fat, muscles and fluids in the body is calculated, Doppler ultrasonography of the vessels of the neck and veins of the legs, densitometry (determination of bone density); it is better to check the exact list of analyzes and studies in the chosen clinic.

Is it possible to undergo an even more thorough examination?

In addition to basic sports screening, there is an overtraining test, which is performed separately or included in the extended checkup. Such a test can be useful if you have been training for a long time, but do not notice the result, or do not feel well during exercise, are easily irritated, and do not sleep well. Typically, overtraining is experienced by professional athletes, but it can also occur in amateurs, for example, during intensive training, when the body is not ready for them. Frequent colds, malfunctions of the cardiovascular system (for example, rapid heart rate with light loads), a sharp decrease in weight is a signal that it is time to take a time out. What will the laboratory analysis show in this case? High levels of cortisol (a stress hormone), a decrease in testosterone up to 40% of the norm and sometimes (with severe depletion of the body) low levels of protein in the blood.

The Advanced Sports Checkup is a great option for those looking to run a marathon, jump with a parachute or go diving. If you have been exercising regularly and for a long time, have a predisposition to cardiovascular diseases, or have decided to seriously go in for sports after 25-30 years, it is also useful to undergo an extended examination. In addition to the tests included in the basic screening, the extended checkup is complemented by a comprehensive ECG, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, spirometry to assess lung function, ultrasound of the knee joints and computer pulse oximetry to check the quality of sleep and how quickly your blood is saturated with oxygen under different loads. Anton Feoktistov says that the more a person moves and exercises, the more often he should check his condition. “I recommend doing a sports check at least once a year, but if you are preparing for a serious competition or decide to go to a sports and health camp, try to be checked every three months or even more often.”

What does it do in terms of sports?

Trainer Anton Feoktistov explains that it is much easier to correctly draw up a personal training program if you rely on accurate medical data and real physical capabilities and abilities of a person. If you follow such a program, then there is every chance to quickly achieve your fitness goal, whether it be general muscle tone, weight loss, or a good time on a marathon distance. In addition, it happens that after participating in one competition, a person begins to prepare for the next, feeling a surge of strength. At the same time, a sports check-up shows that the body is not ready for new heavy loads – it needs about three weeks of recovery (rest and light training). It also happens the other way around – a person falls into a psychological stupor and does not believe in his own strength. Here, too, the results of the checkup often help out: you can clearly make sure that your body has the necessary strength and capabilities that you need to use.

The joint work of a doctor and a trainer allows you to correctly build and control the training process. This is confirmed by the fact that sports screening programs have already begun to be successfully used in sports clubs, studios (PRO TRENER, BIOSPHERE) and medical institutions (Fifth Element, Kivach Clinic) in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moreover, the more detailed the examination, the higher its cost – from 855 rubles for a laboratory test to 78,375 rubles for the most complete set of analyzes and studies.

Is it possible to determine a predisposition to sports?

As Olga Malinovskaya notes, the predisposition to a particular physical activity is genetically determined, but here it is more correct to talk not about specific sports, but about such indicators as speed, strength, endurance, tendency to injury and the ability to recover. Moreover, if the speed largely depends on the presence of certain genes, then endurance trains perfectly. And of course, in professional sports, moral and volitional qualities are very important, and they have not yet been studied from a genetic point of view. It turns out that the formation of an athlete depends not only on physical indicators and “successful” genetics, but also on external factors, education of perseverance and determination.

Who conducted extensive scientific work on studying the propensity to sports. Since the turn of the century, scientists have identified about two hundred genetic parameters that, in theory, could be responsible for athletic performance. The analysis was carried out mainly on the genetic profiles of professional athletes, so the conclusion that can be obtained from the results of genetic sports screening will be based on comparing the profile of a specific person (not necessarily an athlete) with the profile of a professional in a particular sport.

The formation of an athlete depends not only on “successful” genetics, but also on external factors, education of perseverance
and determination

At the same time, the answers to many questions have not yet been found, and not all variants of genes are necessarily associated with certain tendencies of the organism. For example, in 2016, a massive study was published to find the genetic profile of endurance among athletes compared to ordinary people from different ethnic backgrounds. This study did not identify a single combination of genes responsible for cardiovascular and respiratory functions that accurately indicate the cause of high athletic performance. It is believed that there are two successful gene variants for sprinters: ACTN3 R577X and ACE I / D. They are associated with the so-called fast (white) muscle fibers and affect the record speed. However, not every successful speed sports athlete carries only these mutations.

Scientific forecasts are likely to become more accurate in the coming years; in any case, you do not need to rely on the results of a genetic checkup to unequivocally answer the question of what kind of sport your child should play. It will be more correct to find out personal preferences, choose a competent trainer who will adjust the training plan taking into account the medical data and abilities of the child, and make sure that the classes are regular.
